This week’s website review, I decided to review DreamHost because if I had to publish my own website, I would host my site through them.
A little bit about DreamHost: They are a web hosting company that offers shared, VPS, and dedicated hosting services. Not only do they provide many options and benefits for customers who host multiple websites each month, but they also offer many of the same perks even in their smallest starter package.
Some of the benefits of using DreamHost based off the lowest package include:
- 24/7 customer support on chat
- Supports up to 25 websites
- Web storage includes 25GB
- Visits per month up to 40K
- Daily automated website backups
- Free unlimited SSL certificates- for encrypting your connection (Google gives raking preference to this)
- 99.9% uptime promised on shared hosting
- Built in traffic analytics
- Free WordPress migration tool
- Web application firewall and 1 click back up restore
- Custom built control panel
- 1. What is the hosting site name and URL you reviewed?
- The hosting site name is DreamHost and the URL is: dreamhost.com
- 2. Does the site's home page validate?
- No, it does not. It comes back with 84 errors when I check the validation.
- 3. If you were to have your own website, what would the domain name be?
- If it were a portfolio site of just my work, I would go with chynnaart.com and if it were a blog where I would cover multiple art aspects I would use lookingglassintoart.com
- 4. Using the hosting website, document which of your top 3 preferred domains are available.
- Everything that I put in was available. If I were to choose chynnaart as my domain name I would use the .com extension, as that is the first type of site that people will look for. But there was a .blog version and a .art or .fun version as well. The lookingglassintoart was also available as a domain name choice with the .com, .blog, or .art endings.
- 5. How would you rate the site's design, on a scale of 1(horrible) to 10 (fantastic)? Why?
- I would give it a 9. I think they did a good job at simplifying the site the best they could with the amount of information they needed to present. It gave plenty of information but categorized it in a way that didn't feel overwhelming.
- 6. How would you rate the site's usability on a scale of 1 (horrible) to 10 (fantastic)? Why?
- I would give it an 9. I think the site was very useable and easy to navagate to find the answers to questions. They also did a good job at highlighting aspects that people would want to know more information on.
