Starset: Horizons
Starset is a band known for their space-themed shows and albums. They have even written two books that explore space and futuristic themes. The band consists of Dustin Bates (vocals/keys), Ron DeChant (bass/keys), Brock Richards (guitar), Adam Gilbert (drums), Siobhan Cronin (violin), Zuzana Engererova (cello), and Cory Juba (guitar).
Even though they are still a fairly new band when it comes to radio hits, I had been listening to them for a while. So when I saw they were hosting a small, intimate show with a meet-and-greet, I jumped at the chance to go.
The event took place on a Wednesday at the Epic Event Center in Green Bay. We had to arrive around 4 p.m., which felt a little early for a concert, but it turned out to be worth it. The show only sold 100 tickets, so the entire event felt very small and personal compared to most concerts.
After going through security, we lined up for a group photo with the band. There was then a short break before the concert started. Instead of performing on a large stage, the band played right on the floor with the crowd gathered around them, which made the show feel even more intimate.
Between songs, the band added some fun interaction with the audience. After every couple of songs, they would pull a ticket and spin a wheel filled with different activities such as taking a photo on stage or finishing the lyrics to one of their songs. At one point, my ticket was pulled, and I was asked a trivia question for a chance to win a free hat.
Once the concert ended, the band members spread out around different areas of the venue so fans could meet them individually. One of the best parts was that there was no rushing. Everyone had time to talk with them, take photos, and get autographs. I even brought a guitar and was able to get it signed by all of the band members. It was also interesting talking with them because many of the members are highly educated and hold advanced degrees, which you do not always expect from musicians.
Overall, the entire experience was fantastic. The relaxed environment made it easy to talk with the band, and we were able to take plenty of photos and get anything we wanted signed. The best part was that the whole event wrapped up early, and we were actually home by 8 p.m. If you ever get the opportunity to see them at a smaller event like this, I would highly recommend it.
